Every article published on NorwichWire.co.uk is reviewed by an editor before it appears online. Our editorial process is designed to ensure accuracy, fairness and clarity, and to maintain the trust of our readers across Norwich, Norfolk and the wider East Anglia region. This page sets out how we make editorial decisions, how we distinguish different types of content, and what transparency you can expect from every story we publish.
Editorial review and oversight
All articles — whether news, features, analysis, reviews or opinion pieces — are assigned to an editor who checks the copy for factual accuracy, tone, balance and adherence to our standards. For the majority of stories, the relevant section editor (for example, the Local Government Editor or the Business & Economy Correspondent) handles the review. The Editor-in-Chief, William Hargreaves, retains final responsibility for all editorial content and for any significant changes to policy.
For sensitive stories, we apply an additional layer of scrutiny. The following categories are automatically flagged for review by Daniel Keane, our Standards & Fact-Checking Lead:
- Council-related reporting, including planning applications, public spending and local policy decisions
- Legal matters, including court reports, litigation and regulatory actions
- Crime and safety stories, including police investigations and public health incidents
- Health-related stories, including medical claims, treatment outcomes and public health guidance
- Financial claims, including reporting on business performance, investments or economic forecasts
- Stories involving minors, including children in news, education or community features
- Privacy-sensitive reporting, such as reports about individuals’ health, finances or personal circumstances
- Rights issues, including discrimination, housing rights and civil liberties
In these cases, Daniel Keane reviews the sources, checks for corroboration and ensures that any legal or ethical risks have been considered before publication.
Clear distinction between content types
We make a clear distinction between news, opinion, reviews, sponsored content, affiliate content and promotional material. News articles are reported and written to be impartial and fact-based. Opinion pieces, including columns and editorials, are clearly labelled as such and express the views of the author or the publication. Reviews are based on the writer’s first-hand experience and are also labelled. Sponsored content and affiliate links are disclosed in accordance with our Sponsored Content Policy and Advertising & Affiliate Disclosure. Any material that is commercial or promotional in nature carries a prominent label at the top of the article and, where appropriate, within the body text.
Article-level transparency
Every article on NorwichWire.co.uk includes the following information to help you assess its reliability:
- Bylines — the name of the writer(s) is shown, with a link to their author profile page on our Our Team page, which details their role, experience and contact information.
- Publication date and last-updated date — we show when an article was first published and, if it has been significantly updated, the date of the most recent revision.
- Editor/reviewer labels — for sensitive stories, we note the editor who handled the review (often the Standards & Fact-Checking Lead). For all articles, the relevant section editor is listed.
- Source references — we cite our sources, whether they are public documents, interviews, press releases or data sets. Where possible we provide links to the original source.
- Disclosures — if a reporter attended a council meeting, a local event, conducted an interview, visited a site, or used a public consultation document, that is stated in the article. We also disclose if a story is based on a press conference, an official press release or a verified social media post. Commercial relationships, such as press trips or free tickets, are always disclosed.
- Correction notes — if we correct an error after publication, we add a note at the top or bottom of the article, with a link to our Corrections Policy for full details.
Experience signals
To give you confidence in our reporting, each article states the basis for the coverage. For example, you will see language such as:
- “Based on a council meeting attended by the writer on [date]”
- “Reported from a local event on [date]”
- “Based on an interview with [source] on [date]”
- “Following a site visit on [date]”
- “Based on a public consultation document published by Norfolk County Council”
